Virginia Tint Law — Know Before You Tint

50% VLT MAX
Front side windows
35% VLT MAX
Rear side windows
35% VLT MAX
Rear windshield

Virginia law — Code of Virginia § 46.2-1052. No film may be applied to the windshield except to replace the manufacturer's sunshield in the uppermost area of the glass. Film reflectance is capped at 20%, and a vehicle with tinting film must carry a mirror on each side. Multipurpose passenger vehicles may go darker behind the driver. VLT is visible light transmission — the lower the number, the darker the film. We install to legal limits and will walk you through your options before any film goes on.

Tint Care Questions

The things drivers ask most after fresh film goes on.

How dark can I legally tint in Virginia?

Virginia's rule is laid out in the tint law band above: 50% VLT MAX on the front side windows, and 35% VLT MAX on the rear side windows and rear windshield. Multipurpose passenger vehicles may go darker behind the driver. We'll confirm the legal shade for your vehicle before any film goes on.

How long should I wait before rolling down my windows after tinting?

Follow the aftercare guidance provided by the installer. Cure time can vary with the film and the weather, so the shop will give you the right timing for your installation.

Why does my new tint look hazy or bubbly?

A hazy look and small water pockets are a normal part of curing — the film is applied wet, and the moisture works its way out as it dries. It clears on its own over the curing period. Don't press on the bubbles; let them dry out.

Does window film go on the inside or outside of the window?

Automotive window film is normally installed on the inside surface of the glass, where it is protected from weather and road debris.

How should I clean tinted windows?

Use a soft microfiber cloth and a tint-safe cleaner. Avoid abrasive tools, and ask the installer which products they recommend for your specific film.

Can you help me choose the right shade?

Yes. The shop can help you balance appearance, privacy, heat control, visibility, and Virginia's tint laws before installation.
